Brian Arthur Ferguson

Brian Arthur Ferguson, DO, MPH, (Fergy) transitioned into medicine from a background in astrophysics as a Hubble Space Telescope data analyst, writing the background program for the Hubble Legacy Archive. See one of Brian’s favorite galaxies: M83, and the science behind it.

After starting medical school, in 2012 he was invited into the Pathways of Distinction Program in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and was granted membership to the Geneva Foundation for Medical Education and Research (GFMER), culminating with a masters thesis study in Early Childhood Development.

Following medical school, Fergy graduated from the University of Louisville Emergency Medicine Residency Program and was Chief Resident in 2017.  After graduation from residency in 2018, he was assigned by the Air Force as an active duty doc to Keesler AFB in MS. He completed the Tactical Critical Care Evacuation Team (TCCET) pipeline in 2019 and deployed shortly after.

TCCET utilizes intensive care units aboard helicopters and cargo planes to provide medical care and transport for critically injured soldiers.  Fergy’s first and second deployments took him all over Europe and the Southern Arabian Peninsula. Now Fergy is located in Southern Pines, NC, working with medical operations for Pope Army Airfield.

Professionally, Fergy pioneered the development and website design for the peer-reviewed journal: Journal of Wellness. He, and the other Editor-in-Chief (Dr. Martin Huecker), continue to oversee all submissions, reviews and final publications of the journal. Fergy has maintained gratis professorship with the University of Louisville to continue research and maintain the direction of the journal alongside Dr. Huecker.

The Journal of Wellness (JWellness) is a peer-reviewed and completely open access journal that publishes original research, reviews and humanities. Fergy and Huecker created the journal in hopes for greater overall resiliency, physical strength, nutritional completeness, disease prevention and mental health among healthcare professionals and others in high stress professions. Articles therefore encompass all areas of medical, physical and psychological wellness.  This was the first journal of its kind—and is still completely free to read or submit work. The first issue was published December, 2019.

What matters most to Fergy is his faith and family. At the center of the Ferguson household is a library, stacked high in their family room with every shelf billowing over in hundreds of carefully cataloged books. Fergy and his family love to sit in this room, next to their fire, and their books, and enjoy time together.
